The Healing and Transformational Energy of Pluto

Pluto has always been a bit controversial.  In 2006, the International Astronomical Union officially reclassified him as a “dwarf planet.”  They may have demoted him, but that certainly hasn’t quieted his energy.  Pluto still provides an energy to us that is very loud in our lives, making us pay attention, whether we are ready for it or not.

Often called the planet of darkness or death, Pluto’s reputation sounds scarier than it needs to be.  In some ways that description fits, but it shouldn't most of the time, be taken literally.  When Pluto moves through certain sign or makes a strong transit to your natal planets, it can mark an intensely transformative period.  Things may fall apart, end, or be completely reshaped but this doesn’t usually mean physical health or death.  Rather, it speaks to deep change, endings, and rebirth.  Taking Pluto too literally as “death” misses the deeper point.  He is really more about clearing space so something new can grow.

Pluto loves to dig.  He goes straight for the old wounds, the ones you may have buried so deeply you forgot they existed.  He pulls them up from the unconscious and pushes them into your awareness, often through emotional triggers, in the way of, events or people.   Pluto can give you feelings of jealously or manipulation and/or controlling people or situations.   It can feel at times devastating, uncomfortable or just frustrating, but Pluto isn’t trying to punish you.  He’s helping you to  heal or to get out of your comfort zone.  If you face what comes up, you can move forward lighter and wiser and no longer be burdened by the old pain.  Pluto isn’t all bad, he can show up as a new relationship or new job.  Something that you vowed you would never do and are actually doing it and happy.  Ignore Pluto, and life often becomes more difficult, life pushes back… something we have all seen one way or another in ourselves or others.

Because I believe in reincarnation, some of these wounds may even have originated in past lifetimes.  From what I’ve observed, people going through strong Plutonian periods are usually very aware that something profound is happening.  They may not have all the answers, but other planetary energies often step in to help guide them through.  Ignoring Pluto takes a tremendous amount of energy.  While going through these periods can be difficult, doing the inner work makes life far easier on the other side of Pluto than ignoring him.

Pluto takes about 248 years to orbit the Sun, most people never experience a Pluto return in their lifetimes.  For example, my natal Pluto is in Virgo, so I will never have a Pluto return. That said, you don’t need a Pluto return to begin healing old wounds. When other planets move close to, or transit, your natal Pluto, they can stir things up—gently nudging you toward growth and healing. If those signals are ignored, a Pluto return (for those who experience one) can feel overwhelming. And even without a Pluto return, you’re not completely off the hook. When transits activate your natal Pluto, you will feel it.

As you may know, United States is celebrating 250 years as a country in July.  What you may not know,  but probably won’t be surprised when you read this; is that the United States natal chart places Pluto at 27° Capricorn.  Beginning in 2008, Transitting Pluto started moving toward this point, and by January 2021 it was fully activating United States natal Pluto by 1º. I don’t know about you, but I feel this very strongly.  It appears that much of the necessary work hasn’t been done, or hasn’t been done deeply enough, so this Pluto return has been intense, powerful, and very demanding.

Pluto’s return in Capricorn was about dismantling outdated systems tied to authority, big business, and government, so we can rebuilt on stronger foundations, especially around finances and governance. Many describe this as a “phoenix effect.” Power structures are being exposed, historical shadows are surfacing, and corruption is harder to ignore. Capricorn energy breaks things down, so we can be rebuilt more authentically.  From September 1 to November 19, 2024, we experienced the final push in Capricorn to resolve unfinished business there.

And yet… there is still hope.

Pluto entered Aquarius on November 20, 2026, and is now moving through the early degrees of this sign. Because of this shift, we’re still feeling the effects of the Pluto return, but now through a more collective lens. Aquarius is about community rather than individuality, collaboration rather than top-down control. This marks a profound transformation not only for the United States, but for the world, given the US global influence. The ripple effects are being felt everywhere.

Pluto in Aquarius asks for a complete system upgrade to shed rigid, outdated structures in favor of more innovative, authentic, and unconventional ways of living.  Ego-driven power is being challenged, making space for more democratic, community-focused approaches. Boundaries are being tested, and social structures and politics are under intense scrutiny.  Reform is not optional, it’s necessary.

Aquarius encourages progressive thinking, scientific advancement, humanitarian values, and respect for individuality while all working together for the greater good. We’re being asked to embrace our differences and recognize the strength in them. Of course, Aquarius has a shadow side, like every sign. We may also see increased intensity, fear, paranoia, and division. To avoid that shadow, we’re being called to find healthier ways to meet our social needs and move toward the light side, even when it’s uncomfortable. And yes, it is intense and dramatic right now. Confronting issues of power, control, equality, and individual freedoms never is easy

Ultimately, Pluto wants renovation. Wherever Pluto touches our charts, it pushes us to reconnect with our true ambitions, revealing vulnerable areas that need strengthening and fears that must be faced. Many astrologers say this is an exciting time to be alive. “Exciting” isn’t quite the word I’d choose. Challenging, intense, frustrating, anger and deeply transformative, feel more accurate. I do believe United States is going through a major transformation. What that will be is up to the people.

The United States is facing its karma. Still, I remain hopeful that we as a people will choose the light over the shadow.  The energies are here to help us grow and evolve, and I believe we are a strong nation made up of more good people then bad. I believe the good people will rise and make the changes Pluto is asking for.  Aren’t we already seeing this? People standing up, protecting one another, and pushing back peacefully.

And finally, a lighter note. Remember the song “Age of Aquarius”?  I loved that song as a kid, I sang it all the time. When Pluto’s energy feels overwhelming, I highly recommend listening to it. It has a way of lifting the spirit and restoring hope.

We have entered the Age of Aquarius now. We’re here. So let’s do all the beautiful things that song reminds us are possible. (More on the Age of Aquarius at a later time.)

LET THE SUN SHINE IN and to help keep the dark side of Pluto away.
